AODA Section 14 “Accessible Websites and Web Content”

When it comes to your website, information about your products and services may not be accessible to those with mental or physical disabilities. According to Section 14 of AODA, websites must adhere to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 - an internationally accepted set of guidelines developed by a group of web accessibility experts from all over the world.

 

Compliance Deadlines

If you have more than 50 employees and your company is located in Ontario:

  • Beginning January 1, 2014: new public websites, significantly refreshed websites and any web content posted after January 1, 2012 must meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 Level A
  • Beginning January 1, 2021: all public websites and web content posted after January 1, 2012 must meet WCAG 2.0 Level AA other than criteria 1.2.4 (live captions) and 1.2.5 (pre-recorded audio descriptions)
